Kazuhiro Tsuji Wins Makeup Oscar for “Darkest Hour”

  • Category:Event
Japanese makeup artist Kazuhiro Tsuji won the Academy Award for best makeup and hairstyling for transforming Gary Oldman into Winston Churchill for the film “Darkest Hour.”

Tsuji shared the award with David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick, who did hourslong daily applications of the makeup that Tsuji designed.
Accepting the award, Tsuji said, “This is a dream come true for all of us, thank you.”

He also expressed his gratitude to Oldman: “It was a real honor to be on this incredible journey with you and we would not be standing here today if it wasn’t for you. You’re a wonderful actor, a dedicated artist and true friend.”

The makeup design added jowls to Oldman’s face and used a wig made of angora and human baby hair, but left the actor free to make expressive use of his mouth, forehead and eyes.

This was Tsuji’s third Oscar nomination and his first win.
“Darkest Hour” opens in Japan on March 30. The films “Wonder” and “Victoria and Abdul” were also nominated in the makeup category this year.
