M6.3 Quake Hits Southwestern Japan, No Tsunami Warning Issued

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 rattled southwestern Japan on early Sunday but no tsunami warning was issued, the weather agency said.

The quake that occurred at 12:51 a.m. registered 4 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 on an islet near Amami-Oshima Island of Kagoshima Prefecture, with a focus about 160 kilometers below the surface off the island, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The quake was also felt in Okinawa as well as Japan's southernmost main island of Kyushu. There were no immediate reports of injuries or property damage from the quake.
