Kyushu, Shikoku Hit Hard by Typhoon

The powerful typhoon that slammed into western Japan on Tuesday brought torrential rains, a landslide and floods mainly in the Kyushu and Shikoku regions.

The Japan Meteorological Agency called on people to be alert to heavy rain and strong winds, which were expected in eastern Japan, including the Kanto region, on Tuesday night.

In Nobeoka, Miyazaki Prefecture, a downpour caused floods in waterways. Neighboring rice paddies, farms and buildings were submerged.

“Water levels quickly increased from around 5 a.m.,” said Toshiki Tanaka, a 66-year-old local farmer. “Harvest season is coming, but …” However, no riverbanks were reported to have burst.

In Hyuga in the same prefecture, several houses were flooded, leaving six residents isolated. With water levels increasing to waist height, firefighters approached the houses by boat and rescued all six people.
In Oita, a landslide occurred, damaging a home early Tuesday.

In Ibusuki, Kagoshima Prefecture, a 10-ton truck overturned in strong winds in a parking lot at a city-run baseball stadium, knocking down a roadside utility pole. The electric wires on the fallen pole pulled down three other utility poles and a streetlight.

In Tokushima, radar analysis showed more than 120 millimeters of rain per hour at 11 a.m. A truck was stranded at an intersection in the center of the city that was flooded with water to about knee height. Volunteer firefighters pushed it out.

In Minami-Kyushu, Kagoshima Prefecture, a woman in her 60s was temporarily trapped inside her home when it was destroyed by strong winds and sustained a minor injury. Five people were also injured, one each in Miyazaki, Fukuoka, Kochi, Ehime and Hyogo prefectures.

According to the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency, an evacuation directive was issued to 43,834 people of 20,650 households and an evacuation advisory was issued to 632,457 people of 286,625 households in Aichi, Kochi,

Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures as of 6 a.m.
Meanwhile, All Nippon Airways canceled 52 flights and Japan Airlines 38 flights mainly on routes to and from the Kyushu and Shikoku regions.
