Catch the New Year

  • Category:Event
Colorful Edo-kakudako rectangular kites are arranged at a studio in Chosei, Chiba Prefecture, during the busiest period for producing the traditional lucky charm for the New Year season.

This style of Edo (the former name of Tokyo) kite features a detail at its top called unari, which comprises a curved bamboo stick strung with rattan. When the kite flies, wind vibrates the string to make a humming sound.
