Kiryu 1st Japanese to break 10 seconds

  • Category:Event
Track star Yoshihide Kiryu became the first Japanese sprinter to run under 10 seconds in the 100 meters on Saturday.

The 21-year-old clocked 9.98 seconds to win at a collegiate meet with a tailwind of 1.8 meters per second — low enough to still be officially recognized — at an athletics field in Fukui.

The previous Japanese record was 10.00 seconds by Koji Ito at the Bangkok Asian Games in 1998. Usain Bolt holds the world record at 9.58 seconds, which the Jamaican set at the Berlin World Championships in 2009.

A native of Shiga Prefecture, Kiryu clocked 10.01 seconds in April 2013 when he was a senior at Rakunan High School in Kyoto.

As a freshman at Toyo University, Kiryu won the 100 meters at the 2014 Japan Championships. At last year’s Rio de Janeiro Olympics, Kiryu ran the third leg in the 4x100-meter relay to help Japan win silver.

In March 2015, Kiryu clocked 9.87 seconds in a 100-meter race in Austin, Texas, with the help of an above-limit tailwind.
