Japan is ending a measure that suspended some work restrictions on foreign nationals prevented from returning home by the pandemic.

Immigration authorities introduced the temporary measure in 2020, allowing part-time work to maintain livelihoods. It covered people with a type of visa that would not normally allow them to work during their stay.
Justice Minister Furukawa Yoshihisa told reporters on Tuesday that the exemption would be terminated, effective the same day.

Furukawa cited the recent stability in coronavirus infection trends and the increase in the number of arrivals and departures of foreign nationals.

He added that stay permits would be renewed depending on when they expire, so that relevant foreign nationals can prepare for their return home.

The minister said authorities will consider individual circumstances and do their utmost to support the smooth return of the people involved.
