6 Toll Gates Closed In Japan Amid Virus Outbreak

  • Category:Event
An expressway operator in central Japan says it has closed some toll gates after it told dozens of its workers to stay at home due to the outbreak of the new coronavirus.

The Nagoya Expressway Public Corporation says a clerk in his 60s was confirmed to be infected with the virus on Saturday. It says he is in stable condition.

The employee is assigned to the division that operates toll gates. The operator says he is in charge of transporting toll gate staff, and had no contact with expressway users.

All of the 52 employees who were told to stay at home may have been in close contact with the infected worker.

Due to the shortage of staff, six toll gates were closed on the Tokai and Manba expressway on Saturday and Sunday. Officials say the volume of traffic at those gates is relatively low. Other closures are planned through early March.

The expressway operator is urging drivers who used gates on February 16 or later to contact a medical facility if they develop a fever and other symptoms.
