Drone Used For Infrastructure Checks Unveiled

  • Category:Other
KARIYA, Aichi (Jiji Press) — Japanese auto parts maker Denso Corp. unveiled Friday a prototype of an industrial-use drone designed to check the safety of such infrastructure as bridges and tunnels.

By utilizing its sensor and motor technologies developed through its auto parts manufacturing operations, Denso will develop the drone and launch safety check services with the mini aircraft.

There is a growing need for such maintenance services, as social infrastructure built during Japan’s rapid-growth period is aging.
The drone has been developed jointly with Hirobo Ltd., which chiefly makes pesticide-spraying unmanned helicopters.

The 4.7-kilogram drone with four propellers is estimated at several million yen. Denso plans to launch test operations in the second half of this year. The company will initially lease the drone to safety check providers.
