Japanese authorities had reported 2,496 new cases of the coronavirus as of 8 p.m. on Sunday.

They reported 36 deaths, including six in Osaka, five each in Hokkaido and Aichi, and four in Nara.

The overall total of confirmed cases in the country now stands at 199,960, including 712 from a cruise ship.

The tally of confirmed deaths has reached 2,930, including 13 from the vessel.

Health ministry officials say 593 patients in serious condition were being treated at intensive care units or with ventilators on Sunday.

A total of 165,992 people, including 659 passengers and crew members from the cruise ship, have recovered or improved and left hospital.
