Heavy Snow In Tokyo Area Impacts Morning Commute, Injures 120

The Meteorological Agency lifted its heavy snow warning for all 23 wards of Tokyo and other areas on Tuesday, but traffic in the Tokyo metropolitan area continued to be affected by a buildup of snow and icy road surfaces.

According to reports from the Tokyo Fire Department, at least 120 people between the ages of 4 and 92 were injured and transported to hospitals in Tokyo between Monday and 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday after slipping over on the snow. All snow-related injuries recorded by the Tokyo Fire Department thus far are not life-threatening.

In Saitama Prefecture, 53 people have been slightly injured. In Chiba Prefecture, one person was seriously injured and 12 sustained minor injuries. In Kanagawa Prefecture, five people have been seriously injured and 34 slightly injured.

Heavy snow fell across Tokyo and the wider Kanto region on Monday, continuing until early Tuesday in some areas and impacting transportation networks during the morning commute.

On Monday evening, the Meteorological Agency issued heavy snow warnings for Tokyo's 23 wards and most of the Kanto-Koshin region, calling for caution over transportation disruptions, frozen roads and avalanches until Tuesday morning. The warnings were later downgraded to advisories.

The temperature in central Tokyo dropped to 0.3 degrees Celsius after 10:20 p.m. on Monday, and reached 2.7 C by 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways canceled a total of 31 flights, mainly at Tokyo's Haneda Airport, on Tuesday.

Some sections on East Japan Railway's Chuo Line and Ome Line were suspended Tuesday morning but later resumed operations, while all services on the Yokohama Line were temporarily halted. Tokaido Shinkansen were operating at reduced speeds between Tokyo's Shinagawa Station and Odawara Station in Kanagawa Prefecture.

Many sections of the Metropolitan Expressway, Tomei Expressway, Shin-Tomei Expressway, Chuo Expressway, Kan-Etsu Expressway and Tohoku Expressway were closed to traffic.

At Shinjuku Station, many passengers could be seen inquiring about refunds and route changes.

"When I arrived at the station, I found that the service was suspended. I will have to wait until a later date for my business meeting," said a 32-year-old employee who was on her way to Kofu Station in Yamanashi Prefecture for work from her office in Tokyo.

In eastern Japan, snowfall of 11 centimeters was recorded in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, as of 5 a.m. Tuesday, while 9 cm fell in Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward and 8 cm in the city of Saitama.

Yokohama and Utsunomiya, in Tochigi Prefecture, saw 4 cm, while other areas such as the city of Chiba saw 3 cm.
