▼ Tamaki Elected Kibo’s Coleader
- Category:Other
TOKYO (Jiji Press) — Yuichiro Tamaki, a lawmaker in the House of Representatives, was picked as the coleader of Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike’s Kibo no To (Party of Hope) in an election on Friday.
Tamaki, 48, defeated Hiroshi Ogushi, 52, another lower house lawmaker, in a one-on-one contest. Tamaki is expected to launch a new leadership team as early as the beginning of next week.
The new coleader will face a challenge to overcome conflict between party members, including divisions of opinion over the national security laws, deepened by campaigning for the leadership election.
Tamaki will effectively lead the party’s 53 lawmakers from both the lower house and the House of Councillors after Koike indicated that she plans to keep a distance from national politics. The coleader’s term of office will end in September 2020.
Koike’s unifying force in the party has declined since its poor showing in the closely watched lower house election on Oct. 22.
Kibo’s coleader election was held through a secret vote in a general meeting of the party’s lawmakers in Tokyo. Tamaki earned 39 votes, while Ogushi won 14.
“I hope to set up a leadership team as soon as possible,” Tamaki told a press conference after he took up the coleader post. “I hope our team will be fresh and spirited.”
On his relationship with Koike, Tamaki said he hopes to communicate with her in an amicable manner. “By bringing together the gearwheels of national and Tokyo politics, I hope we will be able to generate synergy effects,” he said.
