Komeito Wants Abe to Keep Ishii as Minister

  • Category:Event
TOKYO (Jiji Press) — Komeito leader Natsuo Yamaguchi will request Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to retain Keiichi Ishii of the party as land, infrastructure, transport and tourism minister in a Cabinet reshuffle slated for Tuesday, party sources said Saturday.

Yamaguchi believes that administrative continuity is important as the prime minister plans to intensively take disaster prevention and reduction measures over the next three years following a series of recent natural disasters, according to the sources.

Ishii, 60, who assumed the Cabinet post in October 2015, is currently the only Cabinet member from Komeito, the junior coalition partner of Abe’s Liberal Democratic Party. He is noted for steady responses to parliamentary questions.

Meanwhile, Yamaguchi was set to nominate Tetsuo Saito, 66, currently acting secretary general of Komeito, as secretary general at a party convention in Tokyo on Sunday.

The incumbent secretary general, Yoshihisa Inoue, 71, will step aside to become the party’s first deputy leader.

The personnel change is believed to reflect Yamaguchi’s eagerness to promote a generational shift in the party’s executive team, ahead of next year’s unified local elections and House of Councillors poll.
