Golden Week Holiday Travelers Flood Roads, Train Stations

  • Category:Event
TOKYO - Golden Week holiday travelers clogged expressways and flooded train stations and airports across the country Wednesday on the first day of consecutive national holidays.

Traffic jams stretched over 40 kilometers in eastern and central Japan, with the longest reaching 47 km in Ibaraki Prefecture on the Joban Expressway linking the Tokyo metropolitan area with the northeastern region, according to Japan Road Traffic Information Center.

Many shinkansen bullet trains departing from Tokyo and Osaka were fully booked. The occupancy rate of nonreserved seats on some of them reached 150 percent, railway operators said.

Travelers heading home and taking vacations overseas also flooded airports. According to airlines, over 90 percent of seats on domestic flights and more than 70 percent on international flights departing Japan were occupied Wednesday.

The rush of returning holidaymakers is expected to peak on Saturday.
The Golden Week period includes four public holidays. People who take two weekdays off during this year's Golden Week can have a holiday period lasting nine days from April 29.
