Students at Miyanomori Elementary School in Higashimatsushima, Miyagi Prefecture, walk in their brand-new wooden school building Tuesday on the first day of the third term. The school was established in April 2016 through the integration of Nobiru Elementary School, which was damaged by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, and Miyato Elementary School, which suffered a decline in enrollment.
The Miyanomori school’s 143 students, who had studied in a temporary building, are now in the new school built on a hill using domestic cedar and cypress.
