Boy-Detective Graces The Fastest Train Between Tottori And Kyoto

Attention all Detective Conan fans!

In a collaboration between the Tottori Prefecture Government and the JR West Company/ Chizu Express Ltd, the Detective Conan X Limited Express Super Hakuto Special Train began operations on 3rd December 2023 out of Tottori Prefecture on the JR Sanin Line/ Chizukyuko Railway Line.

As its name suggests, this version of Tottori’s flagship train service is decorated from head to toe in special Detective Conan livery.

At the train's launch ceremony held at Kurayoshi Station in Tottori Prefecture, the eye-catching makeover garnered more than a few appreciative ‘Oohs’ and ‘Ahhs’ from an adoring crowd that braved a light drizzle to see Conan launch his eponymous train.

The exterior of the Detective Conan Ver. Train is embellished with pictures of Conan, Ran, Haibara, and Rei/Amuro, amongst other beloved characters. The most heartwarming illustration has to be the group shot of Conan and the Junior Detectives league peering out at visitors through the window.

The inside of the train is also decked out with Detective Conan designs, from headrest covers to sliding doors. In one carriage, panels from the original manga series adorn the windows.

Even the toilet car is fully decorated with Conan motifs. Each of the six carriages have slightly different features, giving visitors unique experiences as they move from one train car to the next.

The Detective Conan X Limited Express Super Hakuto Special Train commemorates the 30th anniversary of the serialization of the Detective Conan manga, one of Japan’s most famous manga/anime series with a massive global fanbase.

Today, Detective Conan spans more than 100 tankobon volumes and 1,000 anime episodes and continues to serialize in the Weekly Shonen Sunday.

The special decor was unveiled at a celebratory moment in Detective Conan history, but also heralds exciting times ahead for Kansai and Tottori prefectures in the next few years.

A very full calendar of upcoming events:
  • 30th Anniversary of the Limited Express Super Hakuto Special Train in December 2024
  • Opening of Tottori Prefectural Art Museum in March 2025
  • Expo 2025 in Osaka, Kansai in October 2025
  • Renewal opening of the Gosho Aoyama Manga Factory in 2027
Undoubtedly, the new Detective Conan livery on the flagship Limited Super Hakuto fleet is both a symbolic and literal first step in taking advantage of the aforementioned milestones, with the goals of attracting more foreign and domestic travelers and increasing tourism activity between Tottori and Kansai.

JR West Company's Sanin Branch General Manager Shouichi Saeki expressed similar hopes at the opening ceremony.

He hopes that the Detective Conan X Limited Express Super Hakuto Special Train will “increase tourism ridership within Tottori prefecture, increasing attractiveness of the prefecture and as a result, above all else, revitalize the towns and areas along the railway lines”.

The Detective Conan X Limited Express Super Hakuto Special Train Project will run from now until the end of 2025, coinciding with the closing of Expo 2025 in Osaka.

Tickets for reserved seating can be made up to one month in advance of the departure date. The Detective Conan Ver. Train embarks on three trips daily between Kurayoshi Station and Kyoto Station.

The Detective Conan Ver. Train runs as part of the Limited Express Super Hakuto fleet that operates six round trips a day.

So, the timing of rare Conan-themed trains differs from day to day. Please check the timetable and plan your trips carefully so you do not miss out on riding the specially designed Detective Conan Ver. Train!

Three Generations Of Craft Making

Eat now! The owner barked. I looked at him sheepishly, my attention darting between the exquisite marzipan like floral creation and his eyes, torn as to whether to obey his command, or to look away, mesmerised by this miniature sculpture.

Before that abrupt moment, I was in my own world, thinking of where I can source a cup on hot green tea to cut through the rich, bean paste texture of this Japanese dessert called wagashi. Now I had nowhere to hide, sitting in plain sight on the front row, with only the counter separating me from the master’s voice.

My mind had drifted to the taste of the first harvest, when I was brought back to earth by his voice… “Not here” he softened, but “eat it today”, such was his passion for wagashi to be eaten at its best.

A Family History

Since 1909, the same family has been making and perfecting wagashi, with the grandfather Masao Takada being the first artisan to create a sweet potato wagashi in 1928, having discovered it at a Western confectionery store. The father then took over the business until he was unable to use his left hand from a stroke in 1970.

The hand techniques are so important to wagashi making that scientists dissect the hand movements of these experienced chefs, and so his son took over at age of 18. His lifelong dedication bore fruit with an award and recognition from the Imperial family.

Wagashi and Sakai

Wagashi is as synomous to Sakai, as the first harvest of Gyokoro tea is to Uji or Shizouka. While these sweets were originally limited to the aristocracy, they became more popular when they were married with tea in the tea ceremony, where the sweetness of this dessert was thought to be a perfect complement to the astringent yet savory taste of tea.

Since then, wagashi has made its way into the milestones of life, from weddings to funerals, as well as the passing of the seasons.

The motto of Minoya (literally meaning the house of beauty) is that we deliver the taste of good old Japan regardless of the waves ot time, and a neighbour remembers marking his graduation with some red and white manju, recalling a light sweetness that even his family, who don't like red bean paste, can enjoy.

Confectioneries in Sakai and nearby Kishiwada produce original sweets that change according to the season, as well as sweets that are available everyday.

The making of Wagashi and its ingredients

These days when I eat mass produced confectionery, the wrapping comes with a warning that it “may contain traces of tree nuts”.

In a large industrial facility, you can accidentally have traces of nuts, but in the olden times, sweets were hand made in small batches, so the chance of accidental ingredients were much lower.

At those times, they deliberartely sourced what was locally available, including nuts, grains, and beans. So there could be nuts in Wagashi, but it is there on purpose, not by accident. Peanuts are not usually used as an ingredient, but you are more likely to get soya or red beans.

The signature baked sweet potato is light, sourced from farms with a sandy soil, and covered in a light and flaky pastry with egg yolk and butter. It is best eaten within 7 days, so it is a good idea to buy some as souvenirs on the way to Kansai Airport. The store is open from 9am to 7pm Tue to Sat.

Vegan and Lactose Free Pleasures

It is amazing that most of these desserts are vegan, you wonder how they make it so delicious without milk, cream, or eggs.

Actually, Japan was isolated for many years, and western diets such as sugar, eggs and milk was not introduced for many centuries (let alone chocolate, sourced from another kind of bean).

So they were able to exalt such humble ingredients such as grains, nuts, beans and the sweet potato to great heights. They were unhindered by other ingredients, so they perfected what they had.

Location of the Store and Kitchen

Minoya is located in an non descript street, between an appliance store and the Hana okonomiyaki. Yet it is just a few meters away from Kishu Kaido, Japan’s oldest known highway.

While overlooked by the shinkansen, this road carried merchants and pilgrims from times past, when Sakai was at the end of the Maritime Silk Road.

At the Sakai Festival, you can see silk screens that testify to the wealth of these merchants. It is said that before Osaka, there was Sakai, and before Kyoto, there was Nara.

We owe our pleasures to artisans like Minoya, that we can enjoy the same delights as the aristocrats of old.

Getting there

Sakai is less than 30 minutes south of Tennoji on the train or tram, between Osaka and Kansai Airport. It is a 7 min walk from Nankai Suwanomori Station

Maple Madness at Shiba Koen http://jp-gate.com/u/sightseeing/azftyybfmv2o4e 2023-09-28T18:53:00+09:00

JAPAN TRAVEL

Fifty Shades Of Red And Yellow

Shiba Koen in Minato, Tokyo, on the scene since 1873, is the forerunner of Japan’s public parks. It appears plain, the better to enjoy the contrast of the Park’s Momijidani or Maple Valley. Here maple trees abound and are afire with a multitude of shades of reds, yellows, and golds, more than 50 shades for sure. It’s maple madness at Shiba Koen.

This is thanks to the ingenuity of Nagaoka Yasuhei, Japan’s first public and chief park designer from the early Meiji period to the Taisho. Yasuhei chose about 12 maple species to bloom in December as well, so Shiba Koen would be ablaze with colour almost all year round.

Shiba Koen was Yasuhei’s blueprint for future public parks. Natural features of the environment are landscaped so they highlight and offset each other. The Park developed on a small ravine, keeping the old steep rock formations, a brook, a waterfall, to show off the abundant maple and other flora.

A trail upward and around has been made on its slope lined with old jizo, leading to a tiny shrine - through an arch of maple. Shiba Koen was also the blueprint for public parks as communal activity-based spaces. It was the first to sport exercise equipment in 1902.

Shiba Koen’s territory includes a small Toshogu Shrine with its distinctive black and gold lacquer, and the large Zojoji Temple. This gleams with red lacquer and red paint brushed wood.

Opposite Zojoji on the main road is a broad road divider – a park in itself, containing lovely huge overhanging trees, monuments, and a sculpture or two.

The name koen denotes a public park, a concept unheard of before 1873. Then, it was decided to convert the previously exclusive domains of the Edo Period feudal families into public parks for the hoi polloi.

There were so many of these grand grounds that Edo was known as Garden City. Temple grounds were also up for conversion, but they tended to be inclusive, anyway. And so we get Shiba Koen.

I do wonder what winter’s like at Shiba Koen, whether it’s all red hot with maple madness as Yasuhei intended. But maybe it’s winter’s 50 shades of grey.

Getting there

I went to Shiba Koen on the Toei Mita Line from Tokyo.

Immerse Yourself in Sanrio Puroland’s Miracle Gift Parade http://jp-gate.com/u/sightseeing/azftyybdavfask 2023-06-30T21:33:00+09:00

JAPAN TRAVEL

Finally Experience The Theme Park’s Iconic Miracle Gift Parade

For the first time in a little over three years, visitors to Sanrio Puroland will be able to experience the theme park’s iconic Miracle Gift Parade. Featuring beautiful illuminations, stunning acrobatics and moving messages, the parade is sure to capture visitors’ hearts and minds.

Sanrio Puroland: The Wonderful World of All Things Sanrio

Established in 1990, Sanrio Puroland is an amusement park centered around Sanrio characters. Other than that famous Hello Kitty, other characters you might know of include My Melody, Little Twin Stars (Kiki & Lala), Pompompurin, and Kuromi.

A beloved fixture of Japan’s kawaii (cute) culture, these characters are extremely popular not only in Japan, but around the world.

Tucked away in the Tama Region just 30 minutes away from Shinjuku, Tokyo, the 4-story indoor establishment features extremely realistic and immersive interior design and photobooths, amusement rides, an exclusive goods store, and much more.

Return of the Miracle Gift Parade

Dubbed the ‘Miracle Gift Parade’, the charming parade has been a beloved fixture in Sanrio Puroland since it was first launched in December 2015.

As implied, the parade is centered around the theme of luring guests into a fairytale world where miracles abound and wishes to convey the message that if one stays positive and open-minded even in the darkest of times, it is possible for a miracle to occur.

Despite its immense popularity, the parade had unfortunately been temporarily suspended since February 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This June, however, Sanrio Puroland will be re-unveiling the Miracle Gift Parade, this time with different outfits, new music, and even more kawaii performances, all designed in collaboration with Sebastian Masuda, a famous Japanese artist, and other leading Japanese artists.

What to Expect

Beginning with a colorful light show and an entrancing acrobatic act, the parade hooks you in right from the beginning. Actors and characters dolled up in their newly-designed pastel pink, blue, purple and yellow costumes stream into the circular parade space and take turns showing off their different outfits and cute dances in step with the powerful music.

Perhaps one of the most enchanting things about the parade is how it makes use of Puroland’s unique indoor landscape to showcase the characters’ numerous charms and thoughtfully-designed costumes and the moving storyline.

Every fixture and space in the indoor parade area are utilized to their fullest potential to fully transmit the key message of the Miracle Gift Parade to the audience.

The lovely costumes are also complemented by the theme park’s magical interior design and beautiful illuminations, making all photographs taken during the parade picture perfect.

The parade will take your breath away. There’s something new at every turn, the storyline plays out extremely smoothly, and the characters’ stunning outfits capture your attention for the entirety of its 25 minutes. You won’t even notice those 25 minutes fly by!

New Goods to be Bought!

Sanrio Puroland will be selling new merchandise to commemorate the reinstatement of the Miracle Gift Parade.

These items include the Miracle Heart Light (¥1,800), a lightstick that automatically lights up in different colors at specific moments during the Miracle Gift Parade.

CDs and DVDs (¥2,420~¥4,000) of the parade will also be sold, so you can enjoy the miracle created during the parade right in the comfort of your home.

Other merchandise, such as bags, key chains, and posters with new designs will be available over the next month or so. A new dessert menu inspired by the parade will also be available from July.

How and Where to Catch the Parade

The parade will be reinstated from 17 July 2023. The 25-minute parade will take place one to two times a day on the first floor of Sanrio Puroland, in the Puro Village. Parade times will be announced on the official website.

Namachan Brewing http://jp-gate.com/u/sightseeing/azftyybdxh63o2 2023-06-06T22:05:00+09:00

JAPAN TRAVEL

Smoke Beer Factory

If you are in he northern part of the Yamamoto line and want to try some nice beer, stop by Otsuka station and visit Namachan brewing.

When you get in front of the restaurant, you will know you are at the right place when you see the cute mascot, that I guess is named Namachan.

When I arrived there was places at the counter on the first floor, but there is also tables on the second floor. I am not sure how crowded it get, but I saw several people coming who had previously made a reservation.

They have a dozen of beer available on tap, seven of them where their own beer, one was a collaboration with a different brewery and the four last where other craft beer.

They are available in three sizes and the price ranged from 580¥ for the cheapest small glass to 1780¥ for the most expensive pint. You will also get served a 300¥ otoshi on your first order.

They also have food on the menu and as I went for dinner, I ordered their fish and chips. I am by no mean an expert of that dish, but I thought it was good.

As for the beer, you might guess from the place name that they do smoked beer. My first glass was their Rauch, that is a type of beer that I had not tried before.

There was for sure a Smokey taste to it, but nothing overpowering and I did like it. For my second glass, I went with their white beer it’s one of my favorite type and it was also quite good.

The other beer I would mention are the Imperial Rauch, that had a higher alcohol contend and I assume a stronger smoke taste as well as a spicy beer. They seems to often make new beers so what is available might change when you go. They also had whiskey on the drink menu if that is your preferred drink.

On a final note, when I got my glass, the bartender did bring a small painting that illustrate beer, making a nice backdrop for your social media picture. Painting of previous beer where also hanging over the bar to add to the decor.

Explore He History Of Ceramic In Arita And Kyushu

If you are visiting Arita, you are likely in the city to see the famous Arita ceramic.

The best way to explore the history and the style of Arita is probably to visit the Kyushu Ceramic Museum. You can then complete your visit in Arita by visiting the many shops around the town to buy some pieces for yourself.

The first section of the museum present the history of Arita ceramic, you will learn how the discovery of a deposit of a kaolin clay deposit used to make high quality porcelain as well as new techniques introduced via Korea shaped the style of porcelain produced in Arita.

Then  it show the different styles produced in Arita and how their porcelain became prized goods in Europe when Japan opened their borders at the end of the Edo period and pieces started to be made specifically for this market.

What is interesting is also that they show the different steps required to make a piece, that is a surprisingly complex process that is fascinating to discover if you are not that familiar with he process of making such ceramic pieces.

Then there is a big private collection that was offered to the museum and that is displayed in it’s specific room. That third section showcase pottery and ceramic from different regions of Kyushu, that all had their own specific style depending on the region and time.

The fourth room present more modern pieces and here you can see how Arita porcelain. Is not limited to the pieces covered in painting.

Unless you really do not have time, for me the museum is a must, especially for the price, because it’s surprisingly free. In comparison, I went to one of the other paid museum in Arita and it was rather small and not offering that much and I would rather only have visited the Kyushu Ceramic Museum.

Getting there

The museum is located about 700m from Arita station.

A Scenic Train On The Nichinan Line In Miyazaki

If you are in Miyazaki and plan to use the Nichinan line, you might as well decide to take the scenic train Yamasachi Umisachi.

The train run twice a day, usually on weekend and holiday only, between Miyazaki station and Nango station.

The most notable stops on the way are Aoshima, an island that display the unique washboard stone formation that you can see in the region and is also a good destination for surfers, as well as the castle town of Obi.

The train is one of the only scenic train in Kyushu to have some non-reserved seats in car 2, but you can also reserve your seat to be sure to have one. While most of the seats are regular front facing seats, there is also some sofa seats at the end of the car.

On the train running from Miyazaki, there is a picture story show, but I did not see it as I took it only in the other direction.

Other activities in the train include a draw, you have to draw the red ball from a box to win a candy, the rule is that men pick with the left hand and women with the right hand.

This is the same as the rule at the nearby Udo-jingu shrine, where you can throw a small ball on a target and if you are successful, your wish will come true.

They also offer onboard sales, with themed merchandise and some regional food items, including mango soda (mango is the famous local fruit), craft beer from the local Hideji Beer Brewery and cheese manju.

Overall, the ride was nice and it is a relaxing experience if you like riding trains and in this case, the interior design is fancier than if you where to use the regular train that run along the same line
